summer vacation

These pictures were taken last summer in my mom's hometown of New Ulm, Minnesota. Next week at this time I'll be back there visiting my grandparents and a few aunts with my mom and Leila.

This trip couldn't have come at a better time! Its only Monday and this week is already shaping up to be a rough one. A couple weeks ago a reporter from a local newspaper came over and interviewed us about our wedding and all the DIY projects we are currently doing and planning. I just heard back from her today and they decided not to run our story. So disappointing. Mike is also super busy this week with band practices and gigs. Sometimes he has weeks like that. I tend to get really lonely when he does because I work at home all day so if I don't see him in the afternoon/evening, I see no one throughout the day. Mix all that with some annoying banking stuff (why would someone steal a credit card number and charge $3 to it?!), my lack of motivation to workout and 115 degree temps.

But this trip will be fun! Mike isn't going this year, so I'll be missing him a ton, but it will be great to spend time with the girls. My Aunt Deb is teaching an art class next week that Leila will be going to (we'll probably go too...should be fun!). One of my favorite things to do while at Grandma's house was to do art and craft projects with her. One year we made jewelry and another year we went to the stamp store and made greeting cards.

New Ulm is an extremely small town, but I will never get sick of going there! It reminds me of summer time as a kid. Some of our favorite places to go were Schmidts meat market (best summer sausage ever), Flandrau park, climbing up Herman the German and eating at the Kaiserhoff restaurant. We still enjoy most of those, but now as adults its been fun going to Shell's brewery and tasting the beer. This has got to be my favorite small town! Leila would probably agree. This will be her third time to New Ulm and she keeps begging to go back! Apparently she already has her bag packed...American Girl doll and all. I can't believe how much Leila reminds me of myself. :)

The morning after we get back from Minnesota, Mike and I are leaving on a weekend road trip to LA with our friends Ryan and Andrea. We're going to a friend's wedding there and exploring downtown LA. Should be a blast!

happy anniversary!

Happy 30th anniversary to my parents! We took them out last week to Cibo Pizza as a surprise to celebrate and framed this picture for them as a gift. Mike and I are both so thankful to have such amazing parents who both have wonderful marriages for us to learn from.

monograms

The past few days I've been searching for ideas for our wedding invitations and save the dates. While searching for logo ideas, I came across these wonderful monogram logos. They remind me of a project we did in design school. (I wasn't so great at that project, logos are not my strongest talent!)

flower girl dress

Today Style Me Pretty is featuring a gorgeous wedding in Beverly Hills. The colors are absolutely perfect and the photography is beautiful. It got me thinking about possible having the flower girl's dress be a different color. Maybe the dusty turquoise that we are using (almost like this one)? Our flower girl is Mike's niece, Sophia. Turquoise would look absolutely gorgeous on her! My mom will be making Sophia's dress, so we can basically do what we want.

Be sure to check out the rest of SMP's featured wedding here. There are a lot of things about the wedding that are very similar to what we have been envisioning for our wedding. I love the bridesmaids' dresses!

sugar stamping

A friend of mine sent me the link to this post on Paper Source's blog, isn't it lovely?! They took a rubber stamp and made an edible "ink" out of food coloring, powdered sugar and water. I would love to incorporate something like this on the chargers, but we will have a napkin and menu covering it. Hmm...where else could I use this?

family craft day

Today was so much fun! Nate, Brooke, Leila, PJ, my mom, my dad and my cousin Emily came over to my house for lunch at Joe's Farm Grill and then to try out some projects for the wedding. Lunch was delicious as always and the projects went well too!

Leila painted some numbers that we were testing out. She did such a great job at painting them! We applied a crackle paint on them, but it didn't crackle. So disappointing. Not sure if I like the numbers anymore or the blue color. Too much of a baby blue color possibly...

Then we tested out some glass painting. What a process! The large Ball jar in the back is the finish we decided on, but it still needs some tweaks to it. They will be used as hanging candle holders and the turquoise color should show through when they are lit.

Then, my mom surprised me with 20 of these! She was looking for votive candle holders in their garage and ran into these large glass containers. Oh the joys of having a dad in the rental business. He randomly brings things like this home! The ironic thing is my mom and I were searching the night before for glass candle holders this exact size and couldn't find any. We have a very cool idea for these, can't wait to try it out and see if it works!

After we tested a few of these projects out, I took Nate, Brooke and the kids to see the venue since they haven't been out there to see it yet. I was so excited to show it to them, but it was ridiculously hot and humid today. 113. I'm just glad we aren't getting married in July!

drink flags

For the cocktail hour, we plan on serving a signature drink. I'd love to decorate the drinks with some kind of flag attached to a stirrer. The top one is in a dessert, but I love how it uses ribbons. We will be using a lot of ribbons throughout the wedding, so that goes perfect! Although, the second one is great, I love type. The third one is what I'm sure my mom will love. She likes the drink stirrers with pom poms on the top. One time, she came home from a shopping trip with about five packages of them because they were on sale. :)
